 BIO

Katherine Scrivens was born in 1964 Bristol, England. Her Father, David William Scrivens was English, born in Wiltshire, England and her Mother, Pamela Angelina Todd was Anglo-Indian and was born in Calcutta, India. This rich mixed heritage is very present in Katherine’s work. A Tudor inspired portrait for example will often carry vivid patterns and colour detail motivated by traditional Indian decoration. Katherine masters many portraiture disciplines ranging from classical to modern minimalism. She is mostly known for her unique Silhouettes which reflect Scandinavian minimalism and Cave art.

the silhouette artist

The early driving force behind all of Katherine’s work is her fascination with singular stroke silhouettes often expressed in the earthy palette of cave paintings. An encounter with a cave art book as a child ignited an exploration and expression of female silhouettes. Later her backgrounds would be inspired by images in the Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden where nature is presented in imposing magnificence and where humans play a minor role.

Katherine’s Silhouettes can be found on 3 of Dar Al-Saqi book covers –  Dar Al Saqi is the leading book publisher in the Arab world and an important contributor to the renaissance of Arabic cultures.

In 2022 Katherine held a well received Silhouette Exhibition at the prestigious Illums Bolighus – the hub of Scandinavian design in the heart of Copenhagen.

As time went by, inspired by the rich colours of her Indian heritage, Katherine explored a more colourful form of expression within her silhouette paintings. As seen below.

Katherine moved to Denmark for work in 1984 and consequently fell in love with the undisturbed nature and Danish lifestyle. She now works and resides at Harbæksgaard on the island Als in Denmark where she has her own Gallery, Galleri Eje with her husband Thomas Eje Katherine often travels for inspiration for her art.
